Q: How many courses should students be taking per semester?
A: Students in Grades 9-11 must carry a full load of eight courses, four in each semester unless an exception for has been approved by the school’s administration.
Students in Grade 12 may request a study period (spare) if they meet the following criteria:
- They will have a total of 30 credits by the end of the academic year.
- They have a graduation plan approved by a guidance counselor.
- They have three scheduled courses at John McCrae each semester.
Q: Where can students with spares go during their spares?
A: Students with a spare period are requested to be in the Library, Food Court or outside and not in the academic areas.
Q: Can students have more than one spare during a semester?
A: Due to constraints in planning and staffing and because of Ministry of Education regulations, we cannot permit students to take part-time timetables (two or fewer courses per semester). Students who require only one or two courses to complete their diploma requirements, should contact Continuing Education.
